How to prepare for a portrait session
A short, kind guide for anyone nervous about being in front of the camera — most people are.
Almost everyone tells me they’re “not photogenic.” Almost everyone is wrong. Here’s how to make our time together easy.
Wear what feels like you
Skip the brand-new outfit you’re still negotiating with. Solid colours and textures photograph beautifully; tiny busy patterns less so. Bring a second option if you like.
Don’t worry about posing
That’s my job. You’ll never hear “say cheese.” We’ll talk, walk, and mostly ignore the camera until you forget it’s there.
Pick a time that’s calm
Late afternoon light is forgiving and so is an unhurried schedule. If we’re not rushing, the good frames arrive on their own.
Bring the real you
The pictures people treasure are the ones that look like them on an ordinary good day — not a stiff, holding-their-breath version. Come as you are. That’s who I want to photograph.
